The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to ban the circulation of single-use plastics, SUPs, and sachet water, popularly called pure water and other similar products in January 2025.
Tokunbo Wahab, the state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, disclosed this at a stakeholders’ workshop and awareness on the implementation of the ban on the usage of Styrofoam and SUPs for packaging in Lagos.
Recall that the state government banned the use of styrofoam in all government establishments and across the metropolis in general in January 2024, citing their negative impact on the environment.
The commissioner explained that the ban on pure water and allied products constitutes part of measures by the state government to set up guidelines for a sustainable management of plastic waste, healthy and safe environment.
However, stakeholders in the sector called for a phased implementation of the ban for effective and efficient compliance as well as giving it a human face in the present economic hardship.
“We have been engaging Lagos State Government on the way forward and we have been sensitising our members on the planned ban,” Mosaku Ololade, the Lagos chairperson, Association for Table Water Producers of Nigeria (ATWAP), said.
“We want the government to continue to engage us. We are a responsible association. We are ready to work with the government.
“We have over 2,000 members in Lagos alone with over 10,000 workers. We hereby, implore the government to implement the ban in phases to allow our members ample opportunity for compliance.”
