Dickson Ndiema, the man who set ablaze prominent Ugandan athlete and Olympian, Rebecca Cheptegei, has also died.

Cheptegei’s former partner  on Monday passed away in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, MTRH, in Eldoret, Kenya, where he had been battling for his life, following injuries he sustained when he set the super athlete alight.

His death was confirmed by hospital authorities.

According to reports, Ndiema allegedly attacked Cheptegei at her residence and was said to have poured petrol on Cheptegei before setting her on fire.

The fatal domestic violence sent shock waves across the sporting community across the globe, particularly Kenya and Uganda

Cheptegei had suffered 80% burns while Ndiema also had 30% degree burns.

However, despite feverish medical efforts to save her, Cheptegei died a few days later at the same hospita where her former lover has now also died.

Cheptegei, who was known for her achievements in athletics and her participation as a representative of Uganda in the Olympics, was a source of national pride for Uganda.
