The Department of State Services, DSS, has released Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, from its custody.
The labour leader was on Monday arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, while he was about boarding a flight to the UK for an international assignment.
NLC said in a statement: “The assault on Nigerian workers continues. President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, was arrested and abducted by men of the DSS at the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport Abuja this morning on his way to attend an official engagement of TUC United Kingdom and he is now detained at the office of the NSA.
“This intimidation and assault must stop!!!”
The NLC demanded an unconditional release of Ajaero in a communiqué after an emergency meeting of its National Administrative Council, NAC), before midnight on Tuesday (today).
However, apparently to diffuse the building tension, the DSS has bowed to pressure and released the about leader, barely beating the labour union’s deadline.
The NLC in a terse statement posted on its X handle on Tuesday, disclosed that its president has been released.
“Breaking news… Comrade Joe Ajaero released from DSS detention. The struggle continues, we can’t be silenced,” the statement read.
