Ms Chidinma Onwe Adetshina has emerged as Miss Universe Nigeria 2024.

The 23-year-old was crowned a few weeks after she was forced to withdraw from the Miss South Africa pageant.

Adetshina beat 24 other contestants to clinch the coveted crown at the pageant which was held at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.

Chidinma, who was born to a Nigerian father, and a Mozambican mother was raised in Soweto.

She was invited by Silverbird, organisers of the pageant, to take part in the pageant after the controversy that trailed her participation in the Miss South Africa pageant, which led to her withdrawal, setting off a huge backlash over nationality.

Adetshina was subjected to a torrent of abuses from some South Africans, who claimed she was not qualified to contest in the pageant since her father is not South African.

Leon Schreiber, South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister, initiated an investigation into her citizenship, following a request from the Miss South Africa organisers and an outcry from South Africans.

SA Home Affairs said after the investigation that it discovered that the identity of an “innocent” South African mother “may have been stolen” by Adetshina’s mother, leading to her withdrawal from the pageant.
