Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has stated his decision to seek negotiation with the Federal Government over his ongoing trial.
Speaking through his lead counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, Kanu, on Wednesday, told the Federal High Court in Abuja that he would seek the negotiation under Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act.
Responding, Adegboyega Awomolo, counsel to the federal government, informed the court that he did not have the powers to negotiate on behalf of the Federal Government and had told the defendant so.
He advised Kanu to approach the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who has the power to negotiate on behalf of the government.
On her part, Justice Binta Nyako, the presiding judge, said the court’s duty was only to hear cases and not a solicitor.
Kanu has been in detention in the custody of the Department of State Security, DSS, since June 2021, when he was arrested in Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria to face terrorism-related charges levelled against him by the Federal Government.
