A former students’ union leader in Rivers State, Endwell Ahuize Ejindu has become the latest victim of the crisis, trailing the tenure of local government chairmen in the state.
The late Endwell was suspected to have been gunned down by a group of cultists loyal to either of the feuding combatants for political supremacy in the state.
He was a former SUG President of Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Port Harcourt but was on the night of Tuesday, June 18, 2024 reportedly shot dead along Ula-upata Road Ahoada.
It was gathered that the late ex-student unionist Endwell was an oil pipeline surveillance worker in Ahoada East and an alleged whistle-blower against cultism and other violent crimes in the Okporowo community in Ahoada East LGA. The suspected cultists took advantage of the political situation in the state to snuff life out of him.
He was said to have left the venue of protest against tenure elongation for council Chairmen opposite Ahoada East Council and boarded a motorcycle at about 7 pm on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, before he was ambushed and shot dead by three gunmen.
The driver of the motorbike sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to hospital where he is receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state has called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Rivers.
The APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, led by Chief Tony Okocha, on Wednesday, said declaring a state of emergency in the state had become necessary because of a full-blown war there.
“Rivers State is at war. And the dramatis personae who are responsible for the mayhem that has claimed lives are known,” he said.
“The governor is helpless; the police bias helpless. Therefore, the APC in Rivers State is calling for a state of emergency in Rivers State as a way of taming the mayhem, and the upsurge that is going on in the state.
“I call on the federal government to act fast in this regard.”
