Prof Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, on Thursday abandoned his earlier decision to peg the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions to be 18 years.
The minister made the U-turn during an ongoing policy meeting organised by JAMB, in Abuja, where stakeholders in the meeting kicked against the decision, saying it was not logical to deny a 16-year-old student that had passed both JAMB and WASC admission.
The minister accepted the stakeholders’ suggestions that 16 years should be the minimum age for eligibility for this year’s admission, while deferring the law till next year.
Meanwhile, JAMB has set the cut-off Mark for this year’s admission into universities and polytechnics to 140.

However, he added that individual institutions could set higher minimum threshold but not below 140.
