The camp of presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has described the recent court ruling affecting the party’s registration as a temporary setback, insisting that the movement’s quest to build a credible political alternative for Nigerians remains firmly on course.
The reaction followed a judgment delivered by Justice Isah Dashen of the High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, which set aside an earlier order compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party.
The decision has sparked widespread interest across the country, particularly among supporters, who see the proposed party as part of a broader effort to expand political choices and deepen democratic participation in Nigeria.
Responding through the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), spokesperson Idris Zekeri Jnr. disclosed that the organisation had received numerous inquiries from journalists, supporters, and concerned citizens seeking clarification on the implications of the ruling.
According to the statement, the former Anambra governor has directed supporters, coalition partners, and members of the movement nationwide to remain calm and focused while the legal team completes its review of the judgment and initiates the appellate process.
The media office stressed that legal and institutional challenges were always expected in a struggle aimed at confronting an entrenched political order, adding that the ruling would not derail the movement’s vision or determination.
“We have taken note of today’s ruling concerning the legal status of the Nigeria Democratic Congress,” the statement said. “Our legal team is carefully reviewing the judgment and will pursue all available legal remedies. We urge our supporters across the country to remain calm, resolute, and unwavering.”
POMR maintained that significant political reforms are rarely achieved without obstacles, describing the judgment as a momentary hurdle rather than a fatal blow.
Reaffirming its commitment to pursuing its objectives through lawful and democratic means, the organisation assured supporters that its mission remains unchanged.
For the Obi camp, the courtroom setback may have altered the route, but not the destination.
The movement insists that its resolve to offer Nigerians a transparent, credible, and formidable political alternative remains as strong as ever.
